If I were Zelenskyy, I’d give Trump a quitclaim deed to Donetsk, Zaporhizhzhia, and Kherson Oblasts, and Crimea, as follows: “I, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as Representative for Ukraine, with full delegated and actual authority, give The United States all of Ukraine’s right, title, and interest in Donetsk, Zaporhizhzhia, and Kherson Oblasts, and Crimea, in exchange for the current debt to the United States, and for all debt to be incurred by Ukraine for its defense in the next five years.”

That might fix this disaster:

If Ukraine can give the US a property interest in those oblasts and Crimea, that puts US companies there, on the ground - and they'll be doing things vital to the national security interests of the US. And you can bet there will be prepositioned US troops and materiel, just in case, but that wouldn't be out in public. The US tends to be pretty hawkish in defending vital national security interests - Trump isn't Biden or Obama - and Putin knows it. That alone would bring the war - and probably the occupation - to a screeching halt. The idea is to get the Russians out of Ukraine and Crimea, and keep them out, and this deal would have done that - and potentially will do it - I hope.

What a total clusterf*ck on Zelenskyy’s part.

Sure, he has his points, such as Putin being as trustworthy, in the words of Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) “as day-old gas station sushi” - but Zelenskyy doesn’t seem to realize that the presence of American companies and workers in Eastern Ukraine, and the American view that the rare earth minerals there are vital to US national security interests, would be a far better security guarantee than anything on paper.
